Updating the Electoral Scoreboard

With the presidential race still in the courts, the November 3rd unofficial results yield the mirror image of the 2016 contest. In the previous election, President Donald Trump defeated Hillary Clinton with a 306-232 electoral vote margin. In the current election, the margin between President Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden is exactly the same, but this time the close result yields a Democratic victory.

2020 Election Results

In a year like 2020, it is fitting that the presidential election and a number of down-ballot races have gone into political overtime. According to preliminary estimates, 160 million Americans participated in the 2020 general election shattering the previous record of 138 million in 2016. It remains uncertain if the country will eclipse the modern-era record for turnout as a share of the voting-eligible population last set at 63.8 percent in 1960.

US Senate: Early Voting Recap

The Target Smart statistical website has tracked the national early voting process throughout the country and reports segmentation by state. Nationally, through yesterday’s report, they log over 55.58 million people already voting, an increase of 108% from the same period when compared to the last presidential election in 2016. If national voter turnout projections of more than 150 million people prove correct, then approximately 37% of 2020 voters have already cast their ballots.
