2nd Qtr Finances: Senate

The Daily Kos Elections team has assembled the data from the reports submitted from Senate campaigns by the July 15th deadline.

The California and Texas Senate races led the 58 reporting US Senate candidates in Q2 money raised. Rep. Colin Allred (D-Dallas) was technically first in funds raised with $8.63 million, but $2.5 million of that total was transferred from his House committee. Rep. Allred’s potential general election opponent, Sen. Ted Cruz (R), ranked sixth overall but first among Republicans. He attracted $3.35 million in financial support.

California Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Burbank) was the net Q2 fundraising leader, bringing in $8.17 million without transferring from his House account. He also led the all-important cash-on-hand category with $29.8 million ready to spend on his Senate campaign. His two congressional opponents for the Senate seat, Reps. Katie Porter (D-Irvine) and Barbara Lee (D-Oakland) raised $3.12 million and $1.06 million, respectively. Rep. Porter’s cash-on-hand figure is $10.38 million, while Rep. Lee has $1.4 million.

The open Maryland Democratic primary is already becoming interesting. Rep. David Trone (D-Potomac) leads all Senate candidates in self-funding with $9.72 million invested. The Congressman, however, raised only $105,000 from other individuals and entities, ranking 54th of the 58 reporting candidates. His chief opponent for the party nomination, Prince Georges County Executive Angela Alsobrooks (D) raised $1.73 million, ranking 18th among the national Senate candidates and holds $1.33 million in her Senate campaign account.

In the most unique Senate race, because of the three-way contest featuring now Independent incumbent Kyrsten Sinema, US Rep. Ruben Gallego (D-Phoenix), and an eventual Republican nominee, we see hefty fundraising and cash-on-hand numbers. Sen. Sinema raised $1.62 million in the 2nd Quarter bringing her cash-on-hand total to $10.756 million, or third among all 58 reporting Senate candidates. Rep. Gallego was ninth in fundraising with $3.06 million raised. He holds $3.78 million in his Senate account.

The Ohio contest included some surprises on the most recent fundraising circuit. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D) already showing $8.7 million cash-on-hand is no surprise, since he has always been a prolific fundraiser and has known he would face tough competition next year in a state that is becoming more Republican.

Looking at the Ohio Republicans, businessman Bernie Moreno posting $2.26 million raised becomes the current top national GOP Q2 fundraising challenger. More impressively, none of this total is self-contributed. Conversely, his GOP opponent, state Sen. Matt Dolan (R-Chagrin Falls) who has self-funded to the tune of $4 million, raised only $301,000 from individuals and entities other than himself.

The Michigan race is also interesting in that Rep. Elissa Slotkin (D-Lansing), facing credible Democratic primary competition, is dominating the financial aspect of the campaign. She raised $2.75 million for the quarter and has $3.72 million in the bank. Her two reporting opponents, Michigan State Board of Education president Pamela Pugh and former state Rep. Leslie Love, raised only $35,000 and $6,000, respectively.

Cumulatively, the 58 reporting Senate candidates in the 34 races attracted $91.7 million and have over $228 million in their campaign accounts. This does not count any money that Super PACs have raised or plan to spend to affect the outcome of the 2024 US Senate electoral contests.

The Democrats have dominated the early fundraising periods. In the second quarter, their cumulative income total is $71.976 million as compared to the Republicans’ $19.730. Expect larger amounts to eventually support GOP campaigns through outside Super PACs.
